*** FEATURE CLASS *** International Cadet
The International Cadet Dinghy is the only international, two person, three sail, junior racing dinghy limited to sailors up to 17 years of age only. It is a strictly one design boat, made of wood or fibreglass and deliberately too small for adults to sail. A number of International Sailors and Olympic Medalists have sailed Cadets and have been World Champions in the class.
The Class is one of the few sports where 7 year olds compete with and work with 17 year olds and where males and females compete as equals. The Skippers need to learn to lead, mentor and manage their typically younger crew, great life skills for these young champions.
Inter. Cadets are sailed at the Sandy Bay Sailing Club which has trained a number of World Champions in the class, most recently being in 2015 when Sam Abel and Hugo Allison took out the World Championships in Lake Garda, Italy.
The Australian International Cadet Team are traveling to Argentina in late December to contest in the World Championships, which features 6 Tasmanian boats of the 10 boat team. The Tasmanian contigent have been training every weekend under coach Elliot Noye while this weekend the 6 local boats are joined by interstate team boats and national coach Tony Bull for their last team training before Argentina.
