*** FEATURE CLASS *** SB20

The SB20 is a one-design class of sailboat commonly used for racing. Marketed and distributed by Sportsboat World the boat was designed by Tony Castro and launched in 2002. The SB20 was originally called the Laser SB3, and was marketed and distributed by Laser Performance under licence from the designer. This licence ended in 2012.
The yacht is an open keelboat and is designed for racing with a crew of 3 [or 4 ] whose maximum weight must not exceed 270 kg. With a high aspect ratio keel with a very high ballast ratio the yacht is very stable, butalso quite fast due to the substantial sail area.
The SB20 is unique in that it does not allow hiking, using a small stainless steel bar to prevent hiking by the crew, this allows competitive crews of all shapes, sizes and ages. There are over 700 boats worldwide, sailed in over 20 countries. The majority of boats are located in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal, France, Australia, Singapore, Russia, the Netherlands, Germany , Abu Dhabi/Dubai and Italy, and the Class has attracted considerable.
Tasmania has a fleet of 40+ boats, racing the Pennant on Thursday evenings, with monthly Sprint Series on a Sunday afternoon which consists of up to five races.
The fleet of 40+ consists of Junior, Female and Family crews. The two main programs are The Hutchins School Sailing Academy have two SB20s which are raced with full Junior crews, and the Athena Sailing program have four boats that are raced with full female crew, and work to promote Woman in Sailing.

The local fleet will be joined by interstate crews to compete in this months Bellerieve Crown Series (18/19 Feb) and next moths State Championships.
Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and Derwent Sailing Squadron are hosting the 2018 SB20 World Championships in early January, where the fleet will hope that local knowledge helps them perform on a International level.
